Ross Geller is the tomato you specifically asked NOT to be on your sandwich but for some unfathomable reason the one with the power making your sandwich thought "this sandwich needs this slimy, gross tomato to condemn it" stuck it on there anyway and then tried to convince you that it is a delicious and necessary addition. Ross Geller has very few redeeming qualities, and even those are manufactured in spite of every other scene contradicting his so-called good qualities. He is portrayed as sweet and caring but there is little to no actual evidence of that besides the other characters saying that. In the same episode he tries to woo Rachel he yells at her repeatedly, acts like a condescending jerk to her when she loses Marcel and then displays his inability to keep his rage issues in check by kicking a pole. And then she acts like he is still a nice guy who was totally justified! Being upset is justified, yelling a little bit can even fall under expected behavior but the things he yells are unacceptable. He asked her to spend the day taking care of his illegal monkey and then repeatedly insults her. There is no way she should have ever considered dating the loser after that.
The only reason Ross ever convinces Rachel to date him is because one of the writers must relate far too strongly with Ross and wanted to live vivaciously. Joey and Rachel actually makes more sense. But honestly she can do better than both of them. Why the writers felt the need to act like a)Rachel would ever have dated him and b)once she saw the bullet she dodged that she would ever get back with him is beyond me. Even if she was initially dumb enough to ignore all warning signs and date him the first time around there is no way she would be brain damaged enough to date him again.
Speaking of which, let's just dive into the main Ross Geller debate: he knew he was cheating on Rachel, and what he did was unjustified. He called her she said she wanted to be with him and that nothing was happening with Mark but he refuses to listen to her and hangs up on her. Then sleeps with someone else. It was clear she didn't want to break up he was too hung up on his insecurities and need to control her that he ignores facts. Even if we pretend for a second that phone call never happened and he really did think she broke up with him he still immediately jumped into bed with someone else and that hurt her. Prior to this he had only slept with women he was in a relationship with (Carol, Julie and Rachel) so clearly he was capable of keeping it to himself. What makes matters worse is that is does not own up to it. He sticks to his "we were on a break" line well past anyone else maintains any semblance of believing his crap. (One of the best lines is when Chandler calls him out. "Bullets have left guns faster!") He even has the nerve to assume that Rachel's life sucks without him and "the crazy fog has lifted" and she wants him back. No homeboy, the crazy fog is when she dated you in the first place.
He also lies about staying married to Rachel because he is an absolute loser. Why Rachel doesn't just stop talking to him at the point (especially after everything else and his general essence) I will never understand. Also, c'mon Peebs you should have told your friend she was still shackled to Ross.
Let's not forget how friggin possessive of Rachel seven YEARS later. He repeatedly craps all over Joey for having feeling for unattached Rachel. What a jerk. Ross is in no way a "sweet" guy who cares about his friend's happiness. Joey and Rachel actually make more sense since they have fun together and have more in common. Joey can be a real tool bag when it comes to women he doesn't know but he is actually a good friend. He is so worried about Ross's feelings and Ross is super petty. I can understand not liking the women who literally just had your baby getting engaged but I mean she was a free women, you had already made it crystal clear to her (and everyone else) that you did not want to be in a relationship with her (by repeatedly telling her and everyone And going on a date one freaking WEEK before her due date and dating Mona during the pregnancy so he Obviously doesn't think dating other people even when you're having a baby with someone is a problem)but How dare she want help raising her baby!! How dare she want to have support from someone else who cares about her after he turned her down! So completely justified in my absolute rage because I am Ross Geller and my problems are everyone's problems because everything.must.be.about.me! Chill out freak.
Most of Ross's issues are Rachel focused because is obesseseddd with her (Side note obsession does not equal love and does not mean you are entitled to the girl. Snape, I'm looking at you too.) but he is a condescending jerk to everyone. Especially, Phoebe. All the time. He literally has a compulsive need to crap on her beliefs constantly. I really love when she puts him in his place when he was cramming evolution down her throat (which she wasn't outright denying). If Ross were not related to Monica the group would never let him near Rachel after the first time they date and there's a 65% Phoebe or Joey would have killed him and made the world a better place.
Fun ramblings and raves, some hard core rants (usually about Ross Geller or Snape) and some serious talks about real life.
